The robotics company High Precision Systems joined the Odense Robotics StartUp Hub at the Danish Technological Institute this month. Founder and CEO Niels Dahl explains why his startup decided to apply to the Hub and how his lightweight exoskeleton will enhance productivity and work environments by reducing physically demanding and monotonous tasks.
Can you describe your technology and why it’s unique?
At High Precision Systems we are developing a lightweight exoskeleton glove that can deliver great force and functions intuitively as an extension of a user’s hands. It is primarily aimed at physically demanding repetitive work and tasks, which are either too difficult to automate or not economically viable to do so. Here our glove adds value in terms of increasing the efficiency of employees and in the long run it will reduce injuries.
Why did you apply to the hub, and what do you hope to achieve during your stay?
The StartUp Hub’s reputation played a great part in my decision to apply. Its great success and experience with supporting the development of various aspects of specific robotics technology was too good and tempting for me to overlook. The technical assistance offered by the Hub, within areas that are not exactly my expertise, access to facilities and equipment I need to develop my robotics solution – and of course the Hub’s startup community, all made the StartUp Hub the ideal choice for a robotics startup like my own.
I especially look forward to meeting the other startups in the Hub – whom I’m excited to work alongside and hopefully exchange ideas with.
What are your greatest challenges and opportunities?
The cool thing about our product at High Precision Systems is that none of the technologies we use are new. Plenty of people and companies have applied machine-learning algorithms, advanced CAD, closed-loop feedback systems and various production methods before. I’ll even go as far as saying that you can find a YouTube video explaining every single piece of technology we exploit.
The challenge is not to improve these technologies, but rather explore the possibilities and connect the dots in a way that allows us to build an outstanding product.
How did your company start, and who is part of the team today?
I started thinking about the technology I’m now working on almost 4 years ago – only a semester or two into my bachelor studies, but at the time it was far from fleshed out and the idea didn’t get that far. However, since then it kept brewing at the back of my mind and last autumn I started working on it again, this time with much greater success.
While many people in my network advise me on different aspects of the technology, I’m a one-man army. For now it works fine, but I am always looking for potential co-founders or employees with expertise in software and electronics.
