Micro Technic has developed a new innovative IoT datalogging package “Skylark PRO”. The new solution ensures direct and secure data collection from robot or machine sensors to the customer’s own platform or cloud, delivering secure data insights the customer can then use to reduce resources and optimise future processes. Ultimately, the solution helps customers change their business models from product to service, thus making the solution more sustainable than most IoT-solutions.
Through the innovation project “Digital Omstilling – Innovationssamarbejder”, Micro Technic developed the Skylark PRO package that provides the customer with a user-friendly, flexible and highly secure IoT (Internet of Things) sensor collection solution, which can be tailored to the individual customer’s needs – a service data systems usually cannot deliver.
The Skylark PRO system collects data from the sensors on a robot or machine and then sends it directly to the customer’s platform or cloud without going through other platforms first. Thanks to the solution’s new encryption technology, data security is ensured and the customer is provided with total ownership of all data. Once the data has been collected, the customer can then use it to further analyse and detect patterns that can optimise future processes.
“The Skylark PRO consists of a datalogging system and an interface that provides the customer with a go-to-system, something for which we have experienced a great demand. The solution supports changing customers’ business models from product to service, making the solution more sustainable than just “another IoT-solution”. The system is actually named after the skylark bird that can sing and fly at the same time – multitasking at its best, just like our Skylark PRO system,” says Frank Max Laursen, CEO of Micro Technic.
Tech creation and scalable IoT
The project also resulted in Micro Technic developing two unplanned products; “Skylark Secure+” (IoT device with top class data security) and “Skylark GO” (IoT device with built-in sensors). Additionally, an IoT platform for device management, “Skylark Live”, was also recently released.
The solution is now on the market and Micro Technic plans to further develop the solution over the next few years. Before starting the innovation project, package solutions comprised 10% of the company’s turnover, but by 2026 they aim to increase this to 50%.
Another unforeseen bonus of the innovation project was its parameters that provided Micro Technic with the time and opportunity to thoroughly examine their new technology, experience that provided them with a profound understanding on how to scale IoT systems.
“A great thing about the innovation project is the scaling experience we gained. We are now very proficient in scaling IoT. Before starting the project we were proficient at developing hardware, but the project helped ensure that we now have thorough knowledge and experience to further develop and scale our IoT solutions – which enables customers to go from idea to solution faster than ever,” says Laursen.
Collaboration was key
Skylark PRO was developed by Micro Technic in collaboration with Trendlog, Aalborg University and Cryptera through the innovation project Digital Omstilling – Innovationssamarbejder, run by Odense Robotics and Business Hub Fyn.
Micro Technic collaborated closely with Trendlog, who helped visualise the data and then delivered the new interface needed to manage collected data.
The solution’s high security was developed with Aalborg University and resulted in the system’s new enhanced security parametres, as well as through the collaboration with Cryptera, who helped develop the encryption software used to ensure secure data.
